Sam

Sam began playing piano at age 7 in his home town of Essex, Vermont having studied classical piano and music theory growing up.  With over 15 years experience performing in a number of live bands, Sam has cultivated his love for music into a deep understanding of piano, music theory, composition, improvisation and creating an exciting live experience.

Playing a wide variety of music from funk, soul, dance, and solo piano, Sam has played tours on the east and west coasts, as well as music festivals in Oregon such as Cascade Equinox, Oregon Country Fair, and Mojo Family Festival.  He views music as a central source of positivity, joy and inspiration for all areas of life, and is thrilled to be able to share that through teaching.

His teaching philosophy centers around playing music that sparks joy and a sense of awe, while simultaneously allowing a student to grow as a musician.  In particular, Sam enjoys teaching music theory as a gateway to enable students to better understand music they love, and to write their own music should they desire.  Sam’s goal for every student is for them to play music they are excited about, and are proud to show their friends, family, and community.

Sam is also a Masters in Computer Science student at the University of Oregon pursuing research at the intersection of mathematics and computer science.  His Bachelors degree is from Saint Michael’s College in Vermont, where he studied mathematics.  Beyond music and academics, Sam enjoys exploring the beautiful nature of Oregon, learning languages, and cooking delicious food.
